Review of “Pushing 40”, by Kortet.
“Kortet’s debut single is full of subtlety, nuance, and sophistication.”
“Pushing 40” is the brand new single from the World Music Fusion project Kortet. Kortet is the vision of multi-instrumentalist and composer Andy Skellenger, based in the Denver Metro Area. Andy is also a full-time member of the Miguel Flamenco Fusion group. They have regular concerts all around the Denver Metro Area and are an incredibly talented and creative band.
This instrumental composition is filled with incredible creativity and unfolds like a masterful narrative. The track features a commanding performance by Matt Skellenger on the electric bass guitar. All other instruments, including the Kora an African harp, are performed by Andy. The song begins with a cascade of notes that gives way to a mesmerizing melody. The initial impact is relaxing yet over time becomes more somber and trance-like. Eventually, the propulsion that has been carrying the song drops out entirely and gives way to extremes of space. This dramatic change in dynamics highlights the percussive mastery that Andy has become known for.
The utilization of expert musical techniques and odd meter is incredibly accessible, inviting the listener to repeated experiences. Each listen allows for focus on different pieces of the composition and accompanying performance. The overall experience is rich in complexity but never overindulgent, a true sign of the ability of these artists.
Kortet has an entire album recorded that is scheduled for release in the Fall of 2022, and I am incredibly excited to hear their work. It is exceedingly refreshing and inspiring to hear music of this caliber being written and recorded in Colorado. “Pushing 40” is full of subtlety, nuance, sophistication, and a touch of magic that is truly awesome. I highly encourage listening to this release and the entire album when it is available. You can find more information about Andy’s upcoming releases and performances below.
