Review of I Am by El Javi
El Javi is a respected Acoustic Guitarist from Denver, CO. On Friday, April 21st he released his most recent single an Electric Acoustic Fusion and Rock instrumental track titled “I Am”. It is the initial single release of an upcoming album to be released later this year. He recorded, produced, mixed, and mastered the entire song by himself.
Javi found inspiration for this piece in a dream during the early shutdown of Covid-19. Upon awakening, he started to identify and play the melody on the guitar. The virtuoso guitarist Joe Satriani and Steve Vai influenced the creative direction of this piece. When asked about additional influences, Javi credited his spiritual practice of meditation for the creation and meaning of this piece.
The track’s title “I Am” touches on the ideas of individual meaning and identity we hold. Javi stated that his goal was to break down barriers, such as race, culture and gender, to highlight the divine nature he believes we all come from. This message is especially relevant considering how many of us struggled with our sense of identity throughout the course of the pandemic. Of course, all art, especially instrumental music, is open to interpretation. However, I find this message to be incredibly relevant and timely.
The song is, at its heart, an Electric Acoustic Fusion and Rock-infused emotional expedition full of gripping dynamics. The song begins simply by introducing a theme full of atmosphere and energy. As it expands the song expertly revolves through several changes in mood and dynamics. These different sections transition organically while masterfully creating a unique journey for the listener. Some of the most noteworthy moments include expert-level guitar playing and extreme shifts in dynamics.
Those moments include a guitar run at the 1:35 mark, full of blistering spirit. The intense change in dynamics at the 2:40 mark creates a visceral intensity with a notable reduction in business. More impressive technical prowess occurs at 3:30, with further displays of wondrous virtuosity.
El Javi has several exciting upcoming concerts for the Spring & Summer seasons. On Saturday, June 17th he will be performing for Fiesta Latina at the Western New Mexico University in Silver City NM. This is a cultural event organized by Western New Mexico University to “recognize, celebrate and assist in the preservation of New Mexico’s connection with its Mexican heritage, customs, and traditions”.
On Wednesday, July 12th he will be performing at Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Amphitheater at Lakewood Heritage Center in Lakewood CO. This event is supported by Bonfils-Stanton Foundation which offers “inclusive, diverse, and equitable arts & culture and nonprofit leaders to create a thriving and just Denver”.
